Counter Offers…… Should I stay or should I go!

Ok so you have decided to leave your role, you have found a new opportunity, you have show cased your skills, an offer is on the table, you have said YES! Then gone into your boss to resign and guess what a new improved offer to stay is on the table.

Let’s explore what may or may not happen.

Company's Interest: Employers may make counter offers if they value your contributions and don't want to lose you. However, they may also do it out of immediate necessity rather than a long-term commitment.

Your Value: Your value to the company, your skills, experience, and the role you play in the organisation are critical factors. If you are an essential employee, your current employer may be more motivated to retain you.

Motivation: Consider your reasons for considering a job change. If it's solely about compensation, a counter offer might address your concerns. However, if you're looking for a change in responsibilities, company culture, or other factors, a counter offer may not fully address your needs.

Trust and Relationships: The trust and relationships you have with your current employer can impact the success of a counter offer. If you have a good rapport and a history of delivering results, they may be more willing to negotiate with you.

Career Goals: Evaluate whether your long-term career goals align with your current employer. A counter offer might not change the trajectory of your career if it doesn't address other concerns beyond compensation.

Counter Offer Terms: The terms of the counter offer matter. Consider the salary increase, benefits, promotions, and other incentives they offer. Ensure that the terms meet your needs and expectations.

Job Market: Consider the demand for your skills and the job market in your sector. If you have multiple job offers or the job market is competitive, you may have more leverage in negotiations.

Potential Risks: Accepting a counter offer can come with very real risks, such as damaging your relationship with the prospective employer, colleagues, or future job opportunities if your current employer decides to replace you in the future.

In some cases, counter offers can be successful and lead to a positive outcome, allowing you to stay with your current employer under improved terms. However, it's essential to weigh the pros and cons carefully and consider your long-term career goals when making a decision. Keep in mind that the effectiveness of counter offers can vary, and there are no guarantees of success it can sometimes lead to resentment on both sides and can undermine areas around trust and value.
